樺細工は山桜の樹皮で出来ています。その語源は万葉集の長歌の中で、山桜を「かには」と表現したものが後に「かば」に転化したと言われています。山桜の樹皮ははがしても、もう一度再生する環境に優しい素材です。再生した皮は「二度皮」と呼ばれ、樺細工に使うことができます。

Kabazaiku (birch craft) are made from wild cherry barks.The origin of the term comes from a song in Manyoshu ,where the author expressed a wild cherry as “kaniha”, which later changed to “kaba”.The wild cherry balks are also known to be an eco-friendly material, for its barks revive even after it had been pealed off.The revived barks are called  “Nido-Kawa” , also a common material of Kabazaiku.

角館は秋田支藩の城下町として栄えた歴史ある町です。桧木内川沿いには2㎞にわたって染井吉野が立ち並び、今も黒板塀が続く武家屋敷には400本余りの枝垂れ桜が情趣あふれる風景を作りだしています。樺細工はこのような伝統と歴史、自然に恵まれた角館で育まれ、今の暮らしに調和するものを作り続けています。

Kakunodate flourished as a castle town residing in Akita.2km long row of Somei-Yoshino(cherry tree) are planted along the Hinokinai River,and more than 400 weeping cherries around Bukeyashiki(old samurai house) create a warm atmosphere.

Kabazaiku has been preserved in this city full of history, tradition,and nature, and is still being manufactured to meet the needs of modern-day life.
